The builder of a house would have to consider carefully before choosing a site in a frost hollow. Symons was also present at this address, and the evidence from these two papers strongly suggests that Ellis, together with Symons, was involved in the early studies of micrometeorology.

From his life-long association with Sir George Airy, Director of the Royal Observatory and Astronomer Royal (1835-1881), Ellis imperceptibly acquired many of the characteristics of the great man -punctuality, regularity, a love of order, and a methodical way of dealing with official business.
