✦ Synopsis

The overall instability (buckling) of simply supported bars under simultaneous bending and torsion due to central thrust is discussed in the vicinity of the trivial critical state. After introducing the simplest possible formulation governing the postbuckling equilibrium path an analytic and readily applied technique for establishing its initial part is comprehensively presented. This postbuckling analysis refers to prismatic bars with thin-walled open crosssections, whose centroid does not coincide with the shear center. The case of an eccentrically applied thrust as well as other boundary conditions is also considered. The proposed method is illustrated by a numerical example of a monosymmetric I-beam.
