"Post Carbon Cities" va a colmare quella che finora è stata una grave mancanza nelle risorse a disposizione in Italia nella pianificazione delle politiche locali nel contesto climatico ed energetico del XXI secolo. In altre parti del mondo molte comunità e numerosi amministratori locali si stanno preparando ad affrontare con metodo quella che sarà la necessaria e improcrastinabile rivoluzione dei prossimi anni: il passaggio a una civiltà cosiddetta Post Carbon, al progressivo affrancamento dalle fonti fossili in esaurimento, e la volontaria riduzione di quelle attività antropiche incompatibili con la stabilità climatica e la salute degli ecosistemi. Per il raggiungimento di questi obiettivi, nel nostro paese assume particolare importanza il recupero delle antiche sapienze di un passato non troppo lontano, quando la cultura della scarsità e del riciclo e dell'uso intelligente delle risorse locali pervadeva tutta la cultura locale.
