✦ Synopsis
patient we suppose an early release of mesalazine at the upper gastrointestinal tract because of a delayed gastric emptying, with the failure to achieve an adequate amount of drug into the colon. The stress situation linked to the BIB procedure may have played an adjunctive significant role. Mechanical action of the intragastric balloon together with stressinduced contractions, without a specific role of Pentasa tablets for the antiphlogistic effects of mesalazine, may have caused upper gastrointestinal mucosal injury.
In conclusion, BIB seems unsafe in morbidly obese patients with UC especially because of the possible delayed gastric emptying that influences the release of preparations containing mesalazine for the treatment of the intestinal disease, and for other possible complications also related to the presence of the intragastric balloon not desirable in patients with UC.
