The ultrasonic absorption of polystyrene solutions is measured between 0.3 and 185 MHz, using solvents the viscosities of which vary by a factor of about 50. The relaxation frequencies determined by least squares fitting vary at most by a factor of 3.

In the light of recent fiuorcsccncc depolarization and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements in solutions of linear polymeric chain molecules, it is proposed that the local conformational changes belong to two main classes which do and do not obey the diffusion limit, respectively. The implications for internal viscosity effects on flow birefringencc and high frequency viscoelastic behnviour arc discussed.
