Abstract
Applying manyβparticle methods the lowest excitation energy of the exciton is calculated for an insulator with small energy gap. Screening is taken into account by means of a selfβconsistent kβdependent screening function. At the finite critical gap G~c~ the excitation energy vanishes leading to the excitonic phase.
