Simple steam distillation, as a preconcentration step for the isotachophoretic determination of chlorophenols in river and industrial waste waters, was studied. The overall recoveries of the complete analytical method for pentachlorophenol, 2,4,5trichlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2-chlorophenol were found to be 61.0-75.3% in the concentration range 0.02-Q.05 mg I '. The analytical procedure presented permitted to detect 0.010-0.015 mg 1 -' of chlorophenols in waters. The time required for analysis was 15-20 min (not including steam distillation).
