โฆ Synopsis
Some reniarkable effects of guaiacol 011 Valonia have been described (Osterhout, '36-'37 a, b). One of tlie most striking is the large positive potential which develops soon after its application. A similar result is obtained with related compounds including liexyl-wsorcinol (Osterhout, '40-'41 a ) .
It is very interesting to find that siniilar effects may also be produced by unrelated substances, such as benzene and nitrobenzene (Osterhout, '40-'41 In). To explain this it has been suggested by Blinks1 that the effect depends oil an acid reaction and that substances not acid in character may cause the cell to produce acid.
It ie somewhat3 surpibising to find thiit similar effects are produced by
aniline. An example of the effect of 0.08 32 aniline is seen in figure 1.
The result differs from that due to guaiacol in tlmt in most cases the curve rises slightly duriiig the latent. period. It tlicri descciids rapidly (as witli guaiacol). It fails to i k e inueli as long as the aiiilirie remains in contact witli it :R this differs from the situation witli guaiacol where the curve rises (often to the origiiial level) but is iiiore like thc effect of nitrobenzene (Osterhout, '40-'41 b).
The average latent period is about 8 seconds and the positive drop of tlie curve averages about 57 mr. but iriay be as much as 105 mv.
