โœฆ Synopsis

Portal frame design

A program to design single and muitispan rigid portal frames subjected to dead, live, wind and crane Ioadings, PORTAL/FRAME 1, has been contributed to the Genesys library. Haunches may be included and column bases may be pinned or fixed, but frames with closed loops, e.g. a tie across the eaves, are not allowed. Either grade 43 or grade 59 steel may be used.

A minimum-cost ultimate-strength design method is used. The procedure includes a check on the stability of each member and a linear elastic check on the stresses and deflections of the resulting frame. If either check fails, revised sizes are determined. Sections are normally selected from a builtin table of universal beams and columns. Alternatively the designer may substitute his own sections table. The subsystem may also be used to check a plastic design produced ~y hand or other means.
