โœฆ Synopsis

Surface treatment yields low friction polymers

An ion beam treatment that creates a slick, low friction surface on polymeric O-rings, diaphragms, and seals, has been developed by Spire Corporation.

Laboratory results and in-service use have shown that the Spi-Polymer treatment typically reduces the coefficient of friction by an order of magnitude as compared to untreated components, and eliminates the surface tackiness typical of many polymers, including silicone rubber, Viton, and fluorosilicone. In applications such as trochar diaphragms or O-rings, for example, the process can be used to impart a low friction surface that will ease insertion through the polymeric components and remove the need for an added lubricant. In addition, the process aids in automatic assembly lines by eliminating the clumping tendency of polymneric components. Spi-Polymer is a permanent surface treatment that enhances the surface features of various polymeric components without comprising their bulk properties.
