Parthenogenesis and, in particular, polyploidy are rare in animals. A number of cases are known among weevils. Previous models have assumed that parthenogenesis originated in a diploid lineage, involving first an automictic (meiotic) mechanism that then evolves into apomixis. New degrees of polyploi

The chromosomes of two Japanese weevils, Blosyrus japonicus Sharp and Callirhopalus (= Pseudocneorhinus) obesusRoelofs, were studied. The former consists of four races: one 2n and bisexual (= Blosyrusfalcatus Faust) and three parthenogenetic -4n, 5n, and 6n. In general the races are allopatric. The l

The chromosomes of a Japanese endemic weevil, Callirhopalus (= Pseudocneorhinus) bifasciatus Roelofs, were studied from several localities in Japan. All specimens were tetraploid and no males were found in any locality. The results indicate that the species reproduces parthenogenetically.
