β¦ Synopsis
The synthesis of substituted 2-phenyl-benzoxazoles has been accomplished by ring closure of Schiff bases. The compounds have been used as precursors of acrylic derivatives displaying LC properties: R, NO,, CN; R, = -OOC -pC6H4 -O(CH,)600CCH = CH,; R1 = -OOC-pCcjH4-O(CH2)6OOCCH=CHZ, -N(CH,)(CH,)6OOCCH=CH,; R, = NO, Four comb-like homopolymers have been obtained by radical catalysis from the acrylic monomers. The polymers have been characterized by 'H-NMR, DSC, x-ray diffraction, viscometry, and polarizing microscopy. Three of the polymers exhibit liquid crystalline properties of smectic type. 0

## Abstract Two novel coumarinβcontaining monomers, 3,3β²βbis(ethoxycarbonyl)β6,6β²βbicoumarin (3) and 7β[(2βnorbornenyl)methoxy]coumarin (7), were prepared and characterized. They give polymers with __M__~w~ up to 350 000 and are soluble in common organic solvents. Polymers were prepared by high tem
