Abstract
Summary: Macromonomers from SSE were synthesized via ATRP with initiators carrying functional groups that are polymerizable by Suzuki polycondensation. The material obtained had a monomodal molar mass distribution with a polydispersity of 1.3β1.6. The reaction kinetics in bulk and in solution were monitored by in situ ^1^H NMR spectroscopy. Rate constants and the activation energy for SSE polymerization were determined to be kβ=β5.5βΒ·β10^β5^ s^β1^ (DMF, 60βΒ°C), 6.6βΒ·β10^β4^ s^β1^/1.4βΒ·β10^β3^ s^β1^/4.8βΒ·β10^β3^ s^β1^ (bulk, 45/60/75βΒ°C), E~a~β=β60.1 kJβΒ·βmol^β1^ (bulk). Hydrolysis yielded the corresponding macromonomers of poly(styrene sulfonic acid).
