✦ Synopsis

The polymerization of diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) initiated by benzoyl peroxide has been studied at 85oc. The time dependence of conversion of double bonds has been monitored by near infrared spectroscopy and that of the radical concentration by electron spin rescnance spectroscopy. The dominating radical species in the early stages of the polymerization is the all~l radical. Its concentration remains small (approx. 5 x 10-7 mol dm -~) until the conversion of double bonds rises to about 45%. Beyond this conversion, the spectrum changes in shape and the radical concentration increases. The results suggest that the allyl radicals play an important role in this polymerization, especially in the low conversion region.

## Abstract For the preparation of the light‐focusing plastic rod (LFR) a gel rod of partially polymerized diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) (CR‐39) was immersed in 2,2,3,3‐tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate (4FMA) followed by heat treatment under nitrogen. Variations in the chemical composition i
