β¦ Synopsis
AI~tmct~The polymerization of acenaphthylene initiated by BF3-Et20 has been studied in ethylene dichloride and in methylene dichloride.
The influence of monomer and catalyst concentrations, as well as that of the temperature, on the polymerization rate and on the polymer molecular weight has been investigated. The polymerizations are internally of second order with respect to the monomer, at least for conversions below about 50Vo. Reaction order with respect to the catalyst is 1" 5 and the overall activation energy is about 20 kcal/ mole.
The application of a d.c. field (0.1 to 1.0 kV/cm) appreciably enhances the polymerization rate and reduces the order with respect to the catalyst to 1.0. Also the molecular weights are increased by the application of the electric field.
