✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The new polymeric photosensitizer poly[(sodium __p‐__styrenesulfonate)‐co‐(4‐vinylbenzyl chloride/rose bengal)] for singlet oxygen production in aqueous solutions was synthesized and studied. The polymer contains rose bengal (4,5,6,7‐tetrachloro‐2′,4′,5′,7′‐tetraiodofluorescein) chromophores covalently attached to the polymer chain. The quantum yield of singlet oxygen formation by the polymer‐bound chromophore was found tobe close to that determined for free rose bengal. The polymer has been shown to photosensitize oxidation reactions in aqueous media.
