✦ Synopsis
Water and salt sorption and the homogeneity of water distribution have been determined in various polymers and compared with their reverse osmosis desalination properties. A general relationship between the polymer water sorption, the water distribution in the polymer matrix, and the membrane water-and saltpermeabilities has been determined, which indicates that the uniformity of water distribution in the polymer is ar, important parameter controlling reverse osmosis desalination efficiency.
