✦ Synopsis

Polymeric optical waveguides based on a new synthesized bisphenol A-aldehyde polymer (PA-1 resin) have been fabricated using photolithography and reactive ion etching technique. The polymer is novel with relatively high refractive index, low birefringence and absorption at the optical communication wavelengths. The single-mode channel waveguides exhibit a propagation loss of 0.41AE0.05 dB/cm at a wavelength of 1:31 mm and 0.5AE0.05 dB/cm at 1:55 mm for both the TE and TM polarizations. The polarization-dependent loss of the waveguides is 0.1AE0.05 dB/cm at these wavelengths.

## Abstract We analyze the dynamic polarization‐dependent loss (DPDL) of planar‐waveguide‐based variable optical attenuators (VOAs). Our studies show that thermal stress is introduced in waveguides when heat is applied to achieve optical attenuation of Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coupler‐base

The pulse broadening of optical signals in a single mode fiber was studied theoretically in presence of polarization mode dispersion, polarization dependent losses, chromatic dispersion, and spectral chirping. Analytical expressions were derived for the parameters of pulse broadening characteristics
