procedure. Thin-layer chromatography allow s a rapid screening of many solutions for evidence of degradation of the preservative materials. The reader should refer to information published elsewhere 1 for a further discussion regarding the complexity of detecting the presence of degradation products in samples of methyl +hydroxybenzoate.
concl?acsions
Using the thin-layer chromatographic procedures described here to obtain additional evidence, the degradation products of methyl +hydroxybenzoate were definitely proved to be $-hydroxybenzoic acid and phenol. Typical one-dimensional, chromatographic results for several solutions which had undergone partial degradation are shown in Fig. 3. The procedures described here are useful for rapidly de_: tecting breakdown of the esters to p-hydroxybenzoic acid and should prove useful for screening large numbers of solutions for evidence of degradation.
