Abstract
Conflicting interpretations are found in the literature of polarograms of copper (II) in thiocyanate solutions. In the present study it is shown that the polarograms change with concentration of thiocyanate and time of aging of the solutions when the thiocyanate concentration is greater than about 0.1 M. A wave appearing at the most negative potential (halfβwave potential β1.5 V vs. SCE), which is attributed in the literature to the reduction of copper (I) to copper metal or to a catalytic reaction, is actually due to the reduction of hydrogen ions produced as a result of reduction of copper (II) by thiocyanate ions.
