✦ Synopsis


Polarography of I-hydroxyquinoline, 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid and 7-nitro-8hydroxyquinoline-S-sulphonic acid has been carried out in aqueous buffers (pH 1-O to 12-O) of constant ionic strength (O-54 M) at 25 f O-l'%. The observations with 8-hydroxyquinoline and 8hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid were similar to those reported in the literature. The behaviour of the parent molecule of the 7-nitro derivative resembled that of 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid. The nitro group gave a single step up to pH 8.5, above which it split into two. The number of electrons involved in the reduction of the nitro group over the whole pH range using the McBain-Dowson cell and applying the King-Cathcart equation was found to be six. A prewave, of adsorption characteristics, preceded the nitro group wave over the whole pH range. The kinetic p ammeters (an. and -log k") in the case of single step for the nitro group reduction have beencalculatedby Koutecky's method and a reduction mechanism is proposed. Le comportement de la molecule apparent& au d&iv6 7-nitro ressemble a celui du S-hydroxyquinoline-S-a&de sulfonique. Le groupe nitro donne un simple palier jusqu'a pH 8,s; au-dessus il se divise en deux. Le nombre d'electrons impliquts dans la reduction du groupe nitro, dans tout le domaine de pH, en utilisant une cellule de McBain-Dowson et en appliquant 1'6quation de King-Cathcart, est trot& &gal ii six. Une pr6vague. caractt%istique de padsorption, pr&z&le la vague du groupe nitro dans tout Ie domaine de pH. Les paramdtres cinttiques (ana et -log k") dans le cas d'un palier simple pour la reduction du groupe nitro ont et6 calcul6s par la mdthode de Koutecky et I'on propose un m&a.nisme de reduction. Zusammenhrssung-8-Hy~oxyc~~olin, 8-Hydroxychinoiin-5-Sulfontiure und 7-Nitro-S-hydroxychinolin-5-sulfonslure wurden in waissrigen PufFerlGsungen (pH l&12) von konstanter IonenstLirke (0,54 M) bei 25 =I= 0,l"C polarographiert. Die Beobachtungen bei den ersten beiden Verbindungen stimmten mit den Literaturangaben iiberein. Das Verhalten der Nitroverbindung glich dem der 8-Hydroxychinolin-5-sulfonslure. Die Nitrogruppe gab unterhalb pH 8,s eine St&e, welche oberhalb dieses Wertes in xwei aufgespalten wurde. Bei Verwendung der McBain-Dowson-Belle fand man mit Hilfe der King-Cathcart
