✦ Synopsis

Measurements of the polarization dependence of the optical absorption as a function of temperature in proustite, have revealed the existence of a significant anomaly in the polarization shift of the absorption edge at about 200K. this is close to the temperature at which a second order phase change has been reported in this material, and we interpret the observed effects in terms of changes in the spin-orbit splitting of the valence band states due to a structural change involved with the motion of Ag+ ions.
