โœฆ Synopsis

Lasers made of regular (i.e., non-polarization-maintaining) rare earth doped single-mode fibers have birefringence which is randomly distributed along the length of the gain medium. This property and its consequences are examined in detail, together with applications to tunable lasers, as well as to lasers capable of simultaneously lasing in a number of discrete spectral lines.

We report an experimental study of an erbium-doped all-fiber laser with electrically switchable output polarization. Fiber Bragg grating written in a polarization maintaining optical fiber and attached to a piezo-ceramic actuator is used to commute the polarization state of the laser emission. The l

Yb-doped cladding-pumped fiber laser with linearly-polarized output emission was realized. To obtain linear-polarization operation we have applied Bragg grating written in the fiber with high birefringence as the input reflector. The polarization extinction ratio was of 17 dB. A stable and narrow wavelength spacing multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. The laser can produce simultaneous dual-and triple-wavelength lasing oscillations with a narrow wavelength spacing of less than 0.1 nm via using a single fiber Bragg gratings written in pola
