โฆ Synopsis
For the purpose of analysing isobaric analogue resonances, a single-level resonance formula has been incorporated into nuclear scattering amplitudes found with an optical-model potential. The inclusion of the resonance term leads to polarization magnitudes that are easily measurable. By observing the variation of the polarization near the resonance energy, the j-value of the resonance can be definitely assigned. The method is applicable for resonances with partial widths as low as 5-10 ~ of the total width. Because the j-value of the resonance can be extracted even with a very crude polarization experiment, an important new spectroscopic tool is available for finding the j-value of such levels. Examples of data and theoretical polarization curves for various medium to heavy nuclei are given.
