✦ Synopsis


An analytical approach employing the closed form of the Green function for the generalized Coulomb problem is presented for the description of the optical properties of the Li atom.

Rydberg states of atoms and molecules have attracted much attention for a long time. The weakness of the interaction between a Rydberg electron and the core is a reason for the strong influence of external fields on the electron. The Rydberg state polarizability an1 essentially depends on the inner region of this interaction; that is why it differs from a$, the polarizability of highly excited states of the hydrogen atom, in spite of the fact that the indicated interaction has a Coulombic character in the outer region. From the calculations [ 1 ] for Rb the asymptotic behavior of (Y5b has the form @' zz n '. This result qualitatively differs from the power law for the polarizability of hydrogen: a: = n 6 t i n 4 (I'+ I+ 2 ) [ 2 1.
