La extraordinaria novelista Charlotte Brontë tuvo como primera pasión literaria la lectura de poesía, género al que dedicó sus primeros esfuerzos creativos. Desanimada por uno de sus ídolos (el poeta hoy medio olvidado Robert Southey), que no consideraba buena idea que una mujer se dedicase a escribir poesía y mucho menos a difundirla, Charlotte se lanzó a publicar sus creaciones con el seudónimo de Currer Bell, en un volumen conjunto con sus dos hermanas. Aunque funcionan como poemas autónomos el lector reconocerá enseguida los tonos y los temas de sus grandes novelas.
