Nella carrozza semideserta di un treno che corre attraverso la campagna siede un uomo dalla grande testa calva, forte di torace e con un paio di gambette sottili su cui ricadono i calzini allentati di lana scarlatta a losanghe lilla. Il passeggero solitario altri non Γ¨ che il professor Timofej Pavlovic Pnin, esule negli Stati Uniti e titolare di un corso di lingua russa all'UniversitΓ di Waindell, in viaggio per recarsi a tenere una conferenza presso il circolo femminile di un'altra localitΓ della sterminata provincia americana. Ma il professor Pnin - tradito dalla sua passione per gli orari ferroviari, che lo ha indotto a ignorare ogni suggerimento e a elaborare personalmente il proprio itinerario - si trova sul treno sbagliato.
Comincia così, in modo emblematico, il ritratto ironico e affettuoso, esilarante e patetico di uno di quei personaggi che Nabokov sa disegnare con arte insuperata: un buffo 'émigré' caparbiamente determinato a ricercare l'impossibile adattamento a un'altra civiltà , in lotta impari con un mondo in cui tutto - lingua, ambiente, gli oggetti stessi - pare rivoltarglisi contro. Perde tutte le sue battaglie, Pnin: con l'ex moglie Liza, ormai inesorabilmente 'americana'; con il figlio Victor, nel cui personalissimo e un po' lunare universo non riesce a far breccia; con le beghe e mene e manovre accademiche del campus, dalle quali uscirà sopraffatto; persino con la piccola comunità dei suoi compatrioti, chiusa nelle proprie diatribe meschine e nel disperato tentativo di reiterare un passato irripetibile. Anche Pnin si rifugia talvolta, oniricamente, in quel passato: e sono pagine mirabili, affidate a una gamma di intonazioni che trascorre dalla pura comicità alla malinconia.
