The project is being led by Dennis Witmer, director of the UAF Arctic Energy Technology Development Laboratory (www.uaf.edu/aetdl), which is investigating fuel cells and fuel choices for remote applications. The SOFC test is among $6m in projects funded under recent proposals submitted to AETDL for funding by DOE's Arctic Energy Office.
The fuel cell was manufactured by FCT in collaboration with Pennsylvania-based Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation. SWPC manufactures the core fuel cell stack technology, and FCT supplies the balance-of-plant subsystems. Fairbanks Natural Gas has been supplying the unit with natural gas in exchange for the electricity generated, which is powering its building in south Fairbanks.
Daido Metal develops water-powered fuel cell toy car
Nagoya-based Daido Metal Company, a leading manufacturer of bearing metals, has developed a fuel cell toy car that uses water as its source of hydrogen, by electrolysis of pure water. The company will price the toy at around ¥20 000 (US$185), according to a report in the Nikkei Business Daily, and market it to people interested in fuel cell technologies.
Daido Metal developed a fuel cell for cell phones in 2000, and is currently marketing lighting fixtures and toy cars powered by fuel cells that obtain their hydrogen from an attached gas canister. The company is also working with Honda Motor Co to develop ultracapacitors as a supplementary power source for full-size fuel cell cars.
