Fuel-cell buses in Tokyo this summer
The Tokyo metropolitan government will introduce fuel-cell buses this summer to serve on the route between Tokyo Railway Station and the city's new waterfront area, according to The Daily Yomiuri in Japan. The government will apparently decide on the automaker and bus model shortly, which will be leased for ยฅ0.8-1.2m (US$6800-10 200) per month.
A hydrogen fueling station is under construction next to the Tokyo Water Science Museum in Koto, near the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center. Showa Shell Sekiyu and Iwatani International will construct and operate the fueling station, for which hydrogen will be supplied from a liquid-hydrogen plant in Hyogo Prefecture. Information explaining the use of FCVs will be displayed at the station, which will be open to the public.
Fuel-cell leasing service from First Energy
Tokyo-based First Energy Service Co is to lease molten carbonate fuel cell cogeneration systems for plants and offices, which will enable corporate customers to save on the initial capital investment, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The company will purchase fuel cells, install them, procure natural gas or other fuels, and maintain and repair systems for customers who will only pay power fees. The company anticipates sales of ยฅ2 billion (US$17m) for the year to March 2004, winning 20-30 contracts for the new service over the next 2-3 years.
Chubu Electric Power recently announced a planned joint venture with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to lease solid oxide fuel cells -and possibly also MCFCs -from 2004.
