Push to unify standards for micro fuel cells
Japanese electronics companies led by NEC, Toshiba and Hitachi are working to unify technical standards for micro fuel cells to power laptops, cellphones and other portable devices -and ideally turn the standards into global ones by taking the lead in such efforts.
With the expectation that such fuel cells would run on methanol, classified as a hazardous substance, the companies believe the DMFCs must be designed and manufactured to a unified standard to maintain safety and allow their use in a wide variety of mobile devices. They will devise same-size products for each application, such as laptops and PDAs, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
A working committee formed by manufacturers' trade groups -such as the Japan Electrical Manufacturers Association, Battery
