✦ Synopsis

A case of pleomorphic adenoma ("mixed" tumor) of the breast is described Although rare, this is a distinctive primary neoplasm which can be mistaken for a malignant tumor both clinically and radiologically. Brief reviews of the pertinent literature and of the possible origin of this tumor are presented.

Cancer 41:659-665, 1978.

LEOMORPHIC ADENOMAS OF THE HUMAN FE-

P male breast with a histologic pattern similar to that seen in tumors of the salivary glands were not recognized in the English literature until 1969, when Smith and Taylor" reported 9 such cases from AFIP files encountered during a survey of breast tumors containing bone and cartilage. They concluded that these represented intraductal papillomas with stromal metaplasia. Nabert et al." in 1960 in the French literature reported a case of epithelioma with modified stroma or mixed tumor of the breast. Several individual case reports hav.e been published sub-~e q u e n t l y , ~~' ~* ' ~' ~ but the total number of genuine cases of mammary pleomorphic adenoma remains exceedingly small (Table ). The present tumor not only adds to the list, but also illustrates difficulties in diagnosis of such a lesion clinically, radiologically and pathologically. Proper recognition of this is important since the tumor has a better prognosis than those breast carcinomas which have osseous and cartilagenous metaplasia. In fact, the behavior of these tumors is comparable to that of the common pleomorphic adenomas ("mixed" tumors) of the salivary glands. a,
