The author briefly describes shell theory and equations and then surveys the types of shell problem that are important to the structural designer. He outlines the main approaches to the shell problem and then deals with the important effect of the computer on shell analysis. The paper covers stress and deflection analysis, buckling, vibration and the transient response: also, the methods of shell analysis include both the analytical and the numerical. The principal impact of the computer is a new ability to obtain solutions for very general shell configurations. while incorporating structural details that occur in practical design.
