β¦ Synopsis
Eight patients with Functional Class 111. seropositive. erosive rheumatoid arthritis unresponsive to remitlive drugs each underwent nine aphereseh over 3 w e e k . Four had a 40-inllkg plasma exchange and four other\ had a 40-mli kg plasma exchange plus a mean 5.67 X 10' lymphocyte depletion. Both groups appeared to improve clinically. T and B cell counts and OK T4 and OK T8 ratios decreaced in the I~mphopla~maphcrcsis group. Phytohemagfilutiniii stimulation decreased in lymphoplasmapherchis and increased in plasmapheresis patients with significant comparisons (p = 0.02). These findings confirm and extend previous work. Pla\maphercsis and lyrnphoplasinaphcresis appear to have fundamentally difiercnt action\ on Ipphocyte function.
