โœฆ Synopsis

The surface of aromatic polyamide reverse osmosis composite membrane was modified by oxygen and argon plasma. The water permeability of oxygen-plasmamodified membrane increases, and the chlorine resistance of argon-plasma-modified membrane increases. The spectra of the attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the contact angle of the water were analyzed to explain the improvement of the two performances of the composite membrane. The carboxyl groups were introduced when modified by oxygen plasma, and cross-linking occurred when modified by argon plasma.

Reverse-osmosis membrane-grade aromatic polyamides have been synthesized by reacting 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid separately with three different acylchlorides, viz. isophthaloyl chloride, terephthaloyl chloride, and 4,4 -diphenyldicarboxylic acid chloride. The graft copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate, GMA, onto poly(pphenylene terephthalamide), PPTA, film surfaces was investigated to improve adhesion between the PPTA film and epoxy adhesives. The graft copolymerization of GMA was carried out in two steps; a peroxide formation by a combination o
