I n 1948, BERNARD recorded the finding of Coccolithophores from ocean depths to 4,000 meters. Later he recorded other plant species such as Exuviaella baltica and a Nostoc. Dr. PARKE at Plymouth has laboratory records of various flagellates isolated in culture from water samples taken at various depths below the photic zone. She did not publish her findings because she could not rule out contamination of her samples during the open descent of the sampling bottle.
