Katanin, a heterodimeric microtubule-severing protein that localizes to sites of microtubule organization, can mediate in vitro the ATP-dependent disassembly of both taxol-stabilized microtubules and axonemal doublet microtubules. In the unicellular biflagellate alga Chlamydomonas, katanin has been
