✦ Synopsis

Disease resistance genes enable plants to recognize specific races of pathogens and to mount an effective localized defence response. The DNA sequences of nine resistance genes have recently been reported. Most encode a leucine-rich repeat motif, which might provide a basis for recognitional specificities and their evolution. Resistance genes appear to fall into two classes, recognizing either extracellular or intracellular pathogen-derived ligands.
