✦ Synopsis

The Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve was proclaimed by the Government of Ecuador in May 1986. Planning for its management has involved a high degree of international collaboration. By late 1987 a draft zoning plan, regulations and management strategy had been developed. These provide for conservation and for sustainable use for the purposes of artisanal fishing, tourism, local recreation and scientific research. Successful implementation of management will depend upon the idennfication of sustainable funding devoted to day-to-day management of the Galapagos archipelago.
