In this article an attempt is made to place the Soviet economic system in the context of traditional economics, and the problems of Soviet-type central planning in a mature economy are discussed.

(a) ECONOMIC THEORY AND THE SOVIET ECONOMY

  1. Traditional economic theory contrasts two types of system: the competitive or market system, with its "ideal type" of perfect competition, and "command economy", or "planning under a dictator". These are treated as two possible alternative methods of allocating resources.
