โœฆ Synopsis

Distribution of planktonic luminous bacteria in relation t o environmental paramet, crs W R S investigated a t two stations located in the Vellar Estuary. T~urminous microflora showed 11 proriounced seasonal cycle with very low counts during monsoon months followed by ;in increiise in post monsoon and peak counts during slimmer. The popuhtion density of these procnryotes WLS remarkably high ranging from 3.5 t o 33.1 colony forming units per ml. They constituted 2.1 to 62.1 oI'o of the total bacterisl counts. Salinity appeared t o govern the distribution of Iiuninous procaryotes as t.heir counts corresponded well with fluctuations in salinity. Taxonomic affiliation of the isolates revealed predominance of Vibrio harueyi. Vibrio fischeri arid Photohacteriuru leioqnathi exhibited s p ~r s e distribution.
