A historic sailing club has managed to stay afloat through the 1996 yachting season -using p u m p i n g e q u i p m e n t from Hydrainer.
T h e 1 0 6 -y e a r o l d R o y a l N o r t h u m b e r l a n d Yacht Club is based at the Port of Blyth, UK, where a boat known as the Tyne serves as a floating clubhouse for the 800 members. Now over 100 years old, the Tyne was formerly used as a light vessel on Calshot Spit and is now one of the oldest boats afloat in the UK.
The club has 120 moorings in the h a r b o u r -but some of t h e m had silted up because of the large quantities of sand blown over from the adjacent beach by the high winds of recent winters. The sand had reduced the d e p t h of the water to such an e x t e n t t h a t yachts could not be m o o r e d s a f e l y a n d b e c a m e grounded at low tide.
Dredging the h a r b o u r was not a viable option, because the water was too shallow to allow access. In addition, the b e a c h o n t o w h i c h t h e s a n d would have to be d e p o s i t e d was out of reach on the other side of the road along the top of the h a r b o u r wall.
Staff from Hydrainer established that they could solve the yacht club's problem and called in u n d e r w a t e r civil engineering specialists w h o s e divers h a d f r e q u e n t l y u s e d H y d r a i n e r p u m p s for projects of this kind.
The main item of e q u i p m e n t u s e d on this p r o j e c t was a Hydrainer 102S 4 inch solids handling p u m p e q u i p p e d with a s p e c i a l s u c t i o n a d a p t e r a n d connected to a Hydrainer 20 Series diesel power pack located on the h a r b o u r wall.
The p u m p was m a n o e u v r e d underwater, and the sand was transferred back onto the beach from which it originally came through a 60 m run of flexible delivery hose.
All the a c c u m u l a t e d sand was removed from the h a r b o u r d u r i n g e i g h t 1 0 -h o u r diving sessions, leaving a completely clear basin of solid rock.
