A series of layers are deposited on the bearing surface of the piston ring by thermal spraying techniques. The first is layer of nickel alloy as a coupling agent. The second is an anti-abrasive layer of a molybdenum alloy with CrC, WC and MoC and the third is a running-in layer which comprises an AlCu alloy or a nickel-graphite alloy.
