ecently, a college roommate called me. R We had not spoken for about 20 years, so there was a lot of catching-up to do. My friend works for Motorola, and, when he heard what I do for a living, he laughed. He said, "After all this time, you're still with thegas company?" The contempt dripped from his words. While he was busy developing wireless Internet access, I was still tending the plumbing, working for an industry that physically does the same thing it was doing 50 years ago. Even my title did not impress him, since he is in an industry in which one can often make up a title-emperor, czar, supreme commander, maharajah, whatever.

Was my friend right? Is the natural-gas industry an old, stodgy figment of the world prior to the invention of the transistor? Hardly. As we roll into the next millennium, the character of our industry, its role in U.S. economic growth, and our understanding of where things need to go are stronger and more integrated with a nationwide energy strategy than has ever been the case. Wireless Internet access may be pretty cool, but the batteries have to get recharged someplaceand that is where we come in.
