This patent covers a hybrid arrangement of abradable labyrinth seal sections alternating with damper seals. The labyrinth comprises the teeth (12) and abradable material (13). In between sections of labyrinth are the damper seals. The damper seal is made from nonabradable material. Three different types of damper seal design are described: slotted pocket, honey-comb damper, and a hole-pattern damper. The design can be selected to provide the optimum performance. The use of the damper seals permits a closer clearance in the labyrinth sections, which leads to reduced leakage.
