✦ Synopsis

Doria Pilling has accomplished a monumental job in providing for us annotated bibliographies on research studies of physically handicapped children. Specifirally, the research literature on the emotional, social, and educational adjustment of these children is abstracted and presented to the reader in booklet form. The annotations are well done. It is no minor feat to be able to review the important studies, abstract the meaningful data, and present the results in an informative way, devoid of abstruse terminology and statistical jargon. Pilling also offers her point of view in the annotated material and points out the findings of particular significance.

In view of the fact that there is increased emphasis in the USA on handicapping conditions and providing meaningful intervention, readers will find these bibliographies most helpful in obtaining a clear view of the various emotional and educational ramifications of these conditions.

Such annotated bibliographies raise a question of providing such material in this way vs. a regular textbook. In essence l'illing has written a book on physically handicapped children. With a little more sketching out and filler, these bibliographies could become the main part of a book on physically handicapped children. This reviewer regularly assigns material from these booklets for his class in exceptional children. Publications in American special education have appeared to neglect the subject area of these booklets in favor of the mildly retarded and the learning disabled child. Assignment of this material helps the college student to hccome acquainted with a wide number of handicapping conditions.
