Abstract

The free exciton emission bands in CdS are investigated with static uniaxial stress, σ, applied to the crystal. The measured peak shifts and intensity ratios as function of stress σ ∥ c and σ ⟂ c are interpreted on the basis of first order perturbation theory and lead to quantitative information on the stress‐induced mixing of exciton states. In particular, the A(Γ~6~)‐exciton, stress‐allowed for σ ⟂ c, is studied and the corresponding mixing matrix element is determined. For both stress directions a Boltzmann distribution of the exciton concentrations is found.
