✦ Synopsis

Measurements were made of changes in the resonant frequency of piezoelectric quartz crystal resonators over a 1.5-10 K temperature range. Both AT and FC cut 5 MHz, third-overtone, crystal resonators exhibited piezoelectric activity over the specified temperature range. The FC cut crystals showed a minimum in the frequency versus temperature response at 5 K, a phenomenon not observed in the AT cut crystals. Furthermore, the acoustic loss, Q-1, of both resonators increased between 5 and 7 K, when defect relaxation occurred as a result of two-level energy excitations.
