โœฆ Synopsis

Surface acoustic wave filters and delay lines are two application in electronics of piezoelectric ceramics such as LiNbO~3~ LiTaO~3~ and BaTiO~3~, materials which convert a mechanical stimulus into an electrical signal. The basic physics and crystal chemistry of the materials, including ferroelectric ceramics, are described and an outline for further development given.

The discovery of piezoelectric effects in electrically poled barium titanate ceramic, in the early l W s , was a revolutionary contribution to the electromechanical transducer art. Since then, improved barium titanate ceramics adapted to a variety of practical needs have been developed, and a number
