✦ Synopsis
The fluorescence characteristics of a liquid crystal, 4cyano_4_n'-octyloxybiphenyl, were examined as a function of temperature. In the smectic A, nematic and isotropic liquid phases, picosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectra exhibit a monomer-like spectrum immediately after the pulsed excitation, follov..ed by excimer-like fluorescence after 200-300 ps. The crystalline phase emits only monomer-like fluorescence.
