β¦ Synopsis
Transient species which are involved in direct photoisomerization of trans-thioindigo have been invest&ted using picosecond spectroscopy_ The long-lived transient absorption band at 600 nm observed in previous nanosecond experiments was shown to be formed on a picosecond time scale. Such ultrafast formation is inconsistent with the accepted assignmenr of this band as triplet-triplet absorption.

The light induced isomerization of thioindigo (I) and 6,6'-diethoxy-thioindigo (II) has been investigated by means Of nanosecond flash photolysis and steady state methods. A mechanism is proposed in which a common triplet state generated from both the trans and cis isomers is responsible for the iso
